BACP CPD requirements explained

BACP requires members to complete a minimum of 30 hours of CPD per year (or follow a structured CPD plan), with an emphasis on reflective practice rather than simply clocking hours.

What happens in a BACP CPD audit?

BACP audits are carried out on a random sample of members at renewal. When selected, you will be asked to provide a CPD record covering at least the last two years. Records should show dates, activity types, hours, reflections, and what you learned. A disorganised or missing record can delay your renewal or put your membership at risk.

Verified supervision — the HourlyCPD difference

BACP requires members to access regular supervision, and this must be recorded separately from CPD hours. HourlyCPD's supervision log lets you record each session, note your supervisor's name and qualifications, and — on Pro+ — send your supervisor a secure verification link so they can confirm the session directly. Verified sessions carry added weight if you are audited.

  • Send your supervisor a secure magic link by email
  • They confirm the session and add notes — no account needed
  • Verified sessions are marked in your audit export (Pro+)
  • Per-membership — track supervisors for each body separately

BACP CPD — frequently asked questions

Does BACP require a specific number of CPD hours?

BACP recommends a minimum of 30 hours per CPD year. However, BACP's framework is outcomes-focused — you can also follow a structured CPD plan that demonstrates how your learning meets your identified development needs. Quality and reflection matter as much as the raw number of hours.

What counts as CPD for BACP?

BACP accepts a wide range of activities: workshops, conferences, online courses, training days, personal therapy, clinical reading, peer consultation, supervision (recorded separately), and self-directed learning. Any activity that contributes to your professional competence and includes reflective elements is likely to qualify.

What happens if I am selected for a BACP CPD audit?

BACP will write to you requesting evidence of your CPD over a specified period (typically two years). You must provide a record of activities including dates, hours, activity type, and — critically — what you learned and how it has benefited your practice. HourlyCPD's PDF export is designed to meet exactly these requirements.

Can I log supervision as CPD hours in HourlyCPD?

Yes — you can log supervision as a CPD activity (some practitioners choose to include it in their overall learning record) and also in the dedicated supervision log. BACP requires that supervision is documented separately, so keeping both records gives you complete coverage.
